Tony Fagan

I was a very late starter as regards all things art and painting, having been told at school that I was rubbish at it and not to bother. And that was in the “swinging sixties” when supposedly anything counted as “art”!! Anyway, after a career embracing accountancy (booooring) and then as a senior lecturer in much more interesting things, I wandered into an exhibition of art made by the members of the Sefton Art Group, finally deciding to give it a go. After the usual doubts, false starts, experiments with various media and general imposter syndrome when trying anything new, in the last couple of years years I’ve settled mainly into the relaxed practice that is oil painting.
I particularly enjoy painting landscapes, especially mountains, and anything with a boat or several in evidence. The thing with these subjects is that whilst they are broadly stationary, the circumstances in which one views them change constantly. It’s the challenge of capturing that constant change on a two-dimensional surface that helps me to forgive myself for my failures, and come back for another go.
Whether I’m still rubbish at it is for others to judge😁. I just enjoy painting.
